CareMore Medicare Plans in 2027: SCAN or Anthem?

Two different companies use the CareMore name on Medicare plans in Southern California for 2027. Here's how to tell which company your plan is from.

· Khoi Le · Doodle

Short answer: For 2027, two different companies use the CareMore name on Medicare Advantage plans in Southern California: SCAN Health Plan and Anthem Blue Cross (part of Elevance Health). They’re separate companies, and their plans are separate too. The company name on your card or plan letters tells you which one you have.

This is a general guide to telling the two apart. It doesn’t describe, compare, or recommend any plan, benefit, or cost.

Why do two companies use the CareMore name?

CareMore Health is a medical provider group. For 2027, SCAN Health Plan announced a new Medicare Advantage plan developed with CareMore Health. Anthem Blue Cross also continues to offer Medicare Advantage plans that carry the CareMore name. The shared name doesn’t mean the plans are connected. Each company runs its own plans, with its own provider networks, drug lists, and costs.

How are the SCAN and Anthem CareMore plans different?

  • Different companies. One set of plans comes from SCAN Health Plan. The other comes from Anthem Blue Cross.
  • Separate Medicare contracts. Each company has its own contract with Medicare.
  • Separate networks and rules. Don’t assume that what’s true of one company’s CareMore plan is true of the other’s.
  • Availability varies by county. Both companies offer CareMore-named plans in parts of Southern California, but not in all the same counties. Check by ZIP code.

If I’m in an Anthem CareMore plan now, am I moved to the SCAN plan?

No. SCAN’s new CareMore-named plan is a separate plan from a separate company. Being in an Anthem plan in 2026 doesn’t enroll you in it. If you want a different plan for 2027, you have to enroll in that plan, generally during the Annual Enrollment Period. If you do nothing and your current plan continues, you stay in it. Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change, mailed each fall, explains any changes for next year.

How do I compare plans during Annual Enrollment (Oct 15 to Dec 7)?

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, and changes take effect January 1, 2027.

  1. Confirm your county and ZIP code. Plan availability varies by location.
  2. Write down the exact plan names you’re considering, and check which company offers each one.
  3. Check your doctors and hospitals in each plan’s provider directory. Networks differ by company and plan.
  4. Check your prescriptions against each plan’s drug list (formulary).
  5. Read each plan’s Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage for costs and coverage.
  6. Use Medicare Plan Finder (medicare.gov/plan-compare) to see plans available in your ZIP code side by side.
  7. Ask questions of the plan’s member services or a licensed agent before you decide.
